Arthritis

Our Approach:

The two different types of arthritis, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, affect the body in different ways but our approach for treating both kinds is actually quite similar. We engage the patient in an active progressive program to help alleviate stiffness, enhance mobility and flexibility and reduce pain symptoms. Our goal is to help you return to an active lifestyle. Though any degeneration of bone cannot be reversed, our treatment can significantly reduce symptoms and restore function. This helps to alleviate the ongoing costs of medications and the downward spiral caused by the disease.

A comprehensive assessment will determine if our patients may improve with the MyoWorx® approach. MyoWorx® is a fully integrated systems model that determines our treatment protocol. The MyoWorx® approach reveals underlying injury that should be addressed prior to additional therapy.

What is Arthritis?

Simply put, arthritis is the inflammation of a joint or joints. The term is made up from 2 words: arthro, meaning “joint” or “jointed,” and itis, which means “inflammation”. It comes in different forms and there are hundreds of conditions associated with it, most of which we treat. Common associated conditions include fibromylagia, lupos and gout.

Arthritis is a common condition and the disease strikes 50 million adults (1 in 5) and 300,000 children. Arthritis is the USA’s leading cause of disability. In Canada, 4.5 million  (1 in 6) individuals aged 15 years and older report having arthritis. By 2031, approximately seven million Canadians (1 in 5) are expected to have arthritis.

Generally, there are two types of arthritis: rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA). RA and its related diseases are immune-mediated systemic inflammatory joint diseases. OA is a degenerative joint disease with its onset mediated by previous joint injury or other factors. Evidence shows ongoing inflammation and cartilage destruction in both types of arthritis, although it is more pronounced in RA and related immune-mediated joint diseases.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Symptoms:

Rheumatoid arthritis symptoms may include painful swelling, inflammation, and stiffness in the fingers, arms, legs, and wrists occurring in the same joints on both sides of the body, especially upon awakening. Inflammatory arthritis is an autoimmune disorder where an individual’s own antibodies attack tissue in the lining of the joints. It can sometimes attack other internal organs, causing inflammation, swelling and pain.

Inflammatory joint diseases include rheumatoid arthritis (RA), juvenile arthritis (JA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), gout and others. It is estimated that one million Canadians live with inflammatory types of arthritis.

Osteoarthritis Symptoms:

Symptoms of osteoarthritis may include joint pain and progressive stiffness that develops gradually.
